Julen Lopetegui was reportedly given another two games to save his job as West Ham boss following the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool.
If that was the case then another capitulation in the 4-1 defeat at Man City surely puts West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui on the brink.
The Hammers now go to Aston Villa in the FA Cup next.
The pressure will intensify because West Ham’s Premier League season is all but over following the defeat at Man City.
The Hammers are not going to be relegated and are now 10 points off a European spot.
After spending £155m on nine new players and hiring a new manager, West Ham’s owners did not expect to be languishing down in the lower reaches of the table over halfway through the season.
West Ham have just six league wins from 20 games and were battered 5-1 in the League Cup at Liverpool.
Lopetegui’s faceless and spineless side have shipped more than three goals on NINE occasions.
Many Hammers fans have been baffled as to how the Spaniard remains in the job.
Thomas confirms chant aimed at Lopetegui by West Ham fans
West Ham’s hardcore away following turned on the manager in the 3-1 defeat at Leicester.
Hammers supporters chanted ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’ that night.
And it was fully expected he would be.
West Ham called an emergency meeting but gave Lopetegui one last chance to turn things around ahead of the game with Wolves.
The Irons somehow managed to go four unbeaten with extremely fortunate wins over Wolves and Southampton sandwiching equally lucky draws against Bournemouth and Brighton.
Liverpool did not let Lopetegui off the hook as those sides had, though, smashing West Ham to smithereens in a 5-0 drubbing that could have been 10.
Despite actually starting brightly against a clearly out of sorts Man City side, the Hammers collapsed once again in another demoralising 4-1 defeat.
Now a top Hammers reporter has clarified an incident from the game which sums up how supporters feel.
Roshane Thomas has confirmed an angry chant aimed at Lopetegui by West Ham fans.
Incorrectly reported on TV, it was West Ham fans calling for manager’s sacking
In coverage on the TV, chants of ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’ could be heard ringing out at the Etihad.
West Ham and Man City fans enjoy great relations dating back to a famous game at Upton Park in 1987.
So when the commentators claimed the chant had been aimed at Lopetegui by Man City fans, it jarred.
Now Athletic journalist Thomas has confirmed the chant did in fact come from West Ham’s packed away end once more.
“West Ham fans singing “You’re getting sacked in the morning”,” Thomas reported from the Etihad.
They say in football when you lose the away fans, it’s game over.
West Ham’s away support do not expect to win every other week.
Far from it after years getting the thin end of the wedge following a club like West Ham.
What they do expect is to see their team compete and fight for the badge.
Not roll over and have their bellies tickled too often to mention.
Whether the owners listen this time remains to be seen.
One thing is for certain, lose at Villa next week and West Ham’s season is all but over with 18 games left to play.
That is unprecedented and so far below expectations it is scary.
Now it will be over to David Sullivan and co to decide whether Lopetegui gets that last chance after his side shipped another nine goals in two games.
Judging by the responses to Thomas, West Ham supporters already think they know the answer.
And that is why apathy is starting to replace anger among the Hammers faithful.
At least when fans are angry it is a sign they still care passionately.
Apathy is a club killer.
