Atlético Madrid are poised to turn to an internal candidate, Julio Marco, as the club seeks to replace departing sporting director Andrea Berta, following his mutual exit after nearly 12 years of service.
Marco, a highly regarded figure in youth scouting and development, appears to be the leading candidate to fill the void left by Berta’s departure.
Berta’s tenure at Atlético saw the club’s most successful era under Diego Simeone, during which they clinched two La Liga titles, three UEFA Europa Leagues, and a Copa del Rey. However, a recent restructuring, which reduced Berta’s role, reportedly left the Italian executive feeling increasingly sidelined, prompting his decision to part ways with the club.
While Berta’s legacy at Atlético is cemented by marquee signings such as Jan Oblak, José María Giménez, and Antoine Griezmann, his potential successor, Marco, has built a reputation for shaping the next generation of football stars.
Marco joined Atlético Madrid in 2021 after a distinguished six-year spell at Arsenal, where he played a pivotal role in the club’s youth scouting network. His work in unearthing talent during his time in London, coupled with a two-year stint at Real Madrid, underscores his extensive expertise in player development.
Currently overseeing Atlético’s strongest academy teams, Marco has earned the respect of the club’s hierarchy for his ability to cultivate young talent and his alignment with the club’s vision for long-term sustainable success. Atlético are expected to prioritise his appointment as a seamless, internally-driven transition.
