Arsenal’s interest in Joan García remains strong, with the 23-year-old Espanyol goalkeeper still viewed as a long-term solution for their defensive ranks.
Despite seeing a €20m bid rejected by Espanyol last summer, Arsenal continues to monitor Joan García closely, recognising his potential even amid Espanyol’s defensive struggles.
García has faced a challenging season. While leading La Liga with 65 saves, he has also conceded 30 goals in 18 matches, reflecting Espanyol’s broader defensive weaknesses rather than his own individual shortcomings.
Only Arsenal loanee, Karl Hein, has conceded more in La Liga.
Despite this, García’s performances have drawn interest beyond Arsenal, but the Gunners are reportedly the only club actively considering a renewed approach.
Espanyol will increase García’s release clause from €25m to €30m as of mid-January, potentially rising to €35m if he earns a national team call-up.
These moves aim to protect his value, especially as Espanyol’s financial situation may force player sales. García, under contract until 2028, is both a key asset and a potential source of revenue for the Catalan club.
Arsenal’s need for a long-term goalkeeper remains pressing. Following Aaron Ramsdale’s departure, the club turned to Neto on a short-term loan, but at 35, he is not a viable long-term option. García fits Mikel Arteta’s vision of integrating young, technically adept players capable of fulfilling Arsenal’s tactical demands.
The north London club’s failed bid last summer—reportedly matching García’s previous release clause—highlights their determination. While Espanyol’s valuation has since risen, Arsenal could return with a revised offer this summer, leveraging Espanyol’s willingness to negotiate under financial pressure.
However, with García’s stock potentially rising further, timing will be critical.
