There’s good news in the wake of yesterday’s thrilling 1-0 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semifinal first leg. Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur went down injured with what appeared to be a non-contact injury after attempting to head the ball, and remained down for ten minutes while Spurs physios attended to him. Bentancur was eventually stretchered off the pitch to applause from both sets of fans, replaced by Brennan Johnson in the side.
There were reports at halftime that Bentancur was conscious and talking, both positive signs, though he was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. It’s still not clear what exactly happened to Lolo, and we won’t speculate about that here — we’ll either hear from the club exactly what the issue was or we won’t, either way it’s not really our business.
But Bentancur did provide a positive update from his hospital bed, posting a photo with his partner and a message of support on his Instagram Stories, later reposted by the club.
There isn’t an update on how much time Bentancur might miss — that depends a lot on what kind of injury it was, and of course we don’t know that. But it’s encouraging that he appears to be awake and in good spirits. That’s an excellent sign that whatever happened to him out there last night wasn’t super serious… just really scary.
