Rodrigo Bentancur has provided a reassuring message after his shock collapse vs Liverpool in the Carabao Cup
Tottenham Hotspur produced a convincing display to beat Liverpool 1-0 in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.
Spurs were the underdogs heading into the game, considering their woeful form in comparison to Arne Slot’s Reds, who have been flying this season and leading the Premier League table. But to almost everyone’s surprise, they did well to stifle the visitors’ midfield and attack and scored a valuable goal nine minutes from regulation time via Lucas Bergvall.
The game was marred largely by a nasty injury to Rodrigo Bentancur in the opening stages. The first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final was halted for around eight minutes after the central midfielder went down with a serious problem to his neck. When attacking a corner kick, he stooped away from the goal to win a header.
However, Rodrigo Bentancur landed awkwardly and was unable to move, as though he’d been knocked unconscious. Players from both teams immediately waved towards the medics and the Uruguayan was treated for a long time on the pitch before being stretchered off. Spectators and players alike watched in silence as Brennan Johnson replaced the 27-year-old.
Later, a statement from the club confirmed that Bentancur was conscious and talking, bringing a level of calm and comfort to the White Hart Lane faithful with the player having been taken to hospital.
The South American star has now himself provided a positive update on his situation, taking to his official Instagram account to concerns of supporters and well-wishers. In a post shared on his story, Bentancur appeared smiling and in high spirits along with his partner Melany La Blanca. The caption read: “All good guys! Thank you for the messages!!! Congratulations for the victory boys!!!”
Bentancur’s Tottenham career has been blighted by injury problems. A quality player, he has failed to live up to his high potential owing largely to fitness issues. In Tottenham’s season-opener against Leicester City, the midfielder suffered a nasty injury following a clash of heads with Abdul Fatawu that kept him out of the following Premier League fixture at home to Everton.

The Uruguayan recently returned from a domestic seven-game suspension that saw him miss some high-profile games. And now this unfortunate incident shows how rocky Bentancur’s time in North London has been. As we await more updates, thoughts are firmly with the player and his family.

We wish Bentancur a speedy recovery and hope to see him on the pitch soon donning our White stripes proudly.
