Edson Alvarez could well have a new lease of life under West Ham United manager Graham Potter.
However, I believe Edson Alvarez might actually be one of the first players Graham Potter ships out of West Ham due to his attitude.
Alvarez has already been linked with a move away from the London Stadium in January, with Monaco allegedly keen to sign him.
Personally, I would happily let him go.
I haven’t been impressed one little bit by Alvarez’s performances for the Hammers so far this season.
He did suffer a serious hamstring injury whilst playing for Mexico in June but still, I expected so much more from him this term.
Alvarez’s lack of discipline has cost us on numerous occasions, notably away at Liverpool and Nottingham Forest this season.
Now I strongly believe that it’s time for the Hammers to move the former Ajax midfielder on from the club.
Edson Alvarez’s admission proves Graham Potter must sell him
I have never truly rated the Mexican.
Since he joined us from Ajax in the summer of 2023, he has been more of a liability than a useful tool for us.
And now he has made an admission that, I believe, shows he’s more interested in other things than playing for West Ham.
Alvarez spoke after being named as captain of the Mexican national team, as quoted by AS:
“Representing my country is a great pride and now that I have the opportunity to be the captain, I simply try to prepare myself in the best way possible,” he said.
“I have a lot to improve because I am human, because I make mistakes, and I have errors.
“It is not easy to see them or accept them and I think that is why I am where I am because you have to have courage to accept your mistakes, learn and move on.”
I find it incredibly annoying that Alvarez has accepted the fact that he must improve, but not to benefit West Ham.
The 27-year-old Hammers midfielder was speaking after being named as the captain of Mexico.
West Ham pay Edson Alvarez’s wages, and his main priority should be his club as far as I’m concerned.
I always get the impression with the Mexican that he places far more importance on playing for his country than he does his club.
Maybe I’m wrong, but I believe his performances for us and Mexico prove that.
Alvarez needs to seriously buck up his ideas for West Ham, especially with Graham Potter now at the helm.
