Lille star Angel Gomes has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham
Ange Postecoglou will be eager to use the January transfer window to get Tottenham Hotspur’s season back on track after slipping down to 12th place in the Premier League table.
Spurs have started the New Year well by snapping up young goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague following injury to No.1 Guglielmo Vicario, who is not expected back until late February or early March.
The North Londoners have run into a defensive injury crisis this season, with Ange Postecoglou’s preferred first-choice centre-back duo, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, constantly sidelined. Ben Davies is also out for over a month now. Destiny Udogie became the latest casualty in defence, suffering a hamstring injury that has ruled him out for a minimum of six weeks.
Obviously, signing a central defender is the club’s top priority in this transfer window. In addition, they are also contemplating signing a midfielder, regardless of the position not in immediate need of strengthening.

According to reputed journalist Dean Jones, Tottenham are looking at signing Lille midfielder Angel Gomes.
Angel Gomes has taken massive strides in his career with Lille, where he has registered nine goals and 19 assists in 129 appearances. He has endured an injury-curtailed 2024/25 season, though, managing only eight Ligue 1 starts thus far.
The England international is into the final six months of his contract at Lille (Transfermarkt), meaning he is eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club this month. He is set to be available on a free transfer in the summer, but Dean Jones claims Spurs could accelerate their pursuit by signing Gomes on a cut-price deal this month.
“They’re also looking at central midfielders and I don’t think it’s going to be anyone earth-shattering,” Jones said (h/t TBR Football).
“They’ve looked at Angel Gomes, who obviously becomes a free agent in the summer. I think primarily that that’s what they’re trying to trigger at the moment just to get him as that free agent to come in the summer. But I know there’s also been some inclination as to like, but what about now?
“What about if he came now? Because obviously, he wouldn’t cost that much to get in now. They’ve also looked at a few others.”

Gomes is highly sought-after, with former employers Manchester United also planning to re-sign him in 2025. The Edmonton-born talent has blossomed into one of Ligue 1’s exciting midfielders, who can operate in various positions. A creative midfielder, he boasts a great eye for pass and technical ability. Also, the diminutive Englishman is increasingly enticing to Spurs as he could be included in their homegrown quota.

With limited funds to spend in this window, the move for the 24-year-old Lille star seems to align with the club’s strategy of exploring bargain deals. However, the agreement may require a sizeable financial commitment from Tottenham, as Gomes is eyeing a contract worth around £150,000-per-week.
