Bayern Munich barely escaped Gladbach’s ground with all three points after a gritty 1-0 win away at Die Fohlen. It wasn’t smooth sailing as the Bavarians missed lots of chances; Leroy Sané in particular was poor for the 70 minutes (which was when he was taken off). It doesn’t help that he’s fighting for his Bayern future but can’t do anything to reverse his fortunes; however, Vincent Kompany won’t use the current contract talks as basis for the 29-year-old’s performances.
“I understand that the whole contract extension thing is a topic right now, but I’m not going to take part in that,” Kompany said (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia). “For me the most important thing is the performance – and how he performed today and in the past weeks. I’ve known Leroy for a very long time, he was my teammate. I don’t know what happened in the past, but right now with me, he’s just as he was as my teammate, and that’s a good thing.
“Of course it’s a pity he didn’t score a birthday goal (the chance in the 71st minute), but there will be another chance to do so in 3-4 days. That’s the focus now.”
Bayern play Hoffenheim next in midweek for the official halfway point of the Bundesliga season.
