Arsenal are set to sign Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi this summer, with the deal virtually done, according to a report.
Sami Mokbel reports for the Daily Mail that Arsenal will sign Martin Zubimendi at the end of the season, with Mikel Arteta courting the midfielder for over 12 months and talks now at an advanced stage. Sources suggest the deal is virtually complete.
The Gunners would prefer Zubimendi to join immediately, but Sociedad have insisted that he finishes the season with them. Arsenal will then formally trigger his €60m (£50.5m) release clause to complete the summer transfer.
Mokbel adds that Arsenal haven’t made final decisions on Jorginho and Thomas Partey’s contracts, but the fact they’re both running down their deals is clearly an incentive behind this move.
Liverpool had strongly pushed to sign Zubimendi last summer, but the player turned them down to remain where he was.
Arsenal didn’t make a formal offer at the time, and Manchester City had seemed like the player’s more likely destination following Rodri’s injury. But it seems the 25-year-old is set for a move to north London instead.
The report concludes that Arsenal will now focus on strengthening their forward options this month.
Zubimendi is a key player for club and country at the moment, making 22 appearances for Real Sociedad this season and starting four of Spain’s last six matches.
The midfielder was also a regular in the Spain squad as they won Euro 2024, making four appearances including 45 vital minutes to win the final following the injury to Rodri.
