After struggling initially, Tottenham’s new record signing Dominic Solanke has firmly established himself as his side’s first-choice centre forward.
With the spot solidified, the Lilywhites are now keen to reinforce the position with backups, and one familiar name has emerged.
Tottenham monitoring in-form Championship forward Josh Maja
As reported by Fichajes, Tottenham Hotspur are considering roping in West Bromwich Albion forward Josh Maja as a back-up to Dominic Solanke, with Chelsea also interested.
Maja arrived at The Hawthorns from Bordeaux ahead of the 2023/24 season but had to miss most of it due to torn ankle ligaments. He has seemingly recovered from his injury ailments, however, and is spearheading the Baggies’ push to return to the Premier League with 12 league goals and 2 assists in 26 games as West Brom lie in the playoff places.
The one-cap Nigeria international last played in the Premier League in the 2020/21 season on loan at Fulham, scoring three goals from 15 appearances.
Maja’s current contract with West Brom is set to run until June 2026.
TTLB Opinion
It’s safe to say things have not turned out the way Maja would have hoped when he famously left Sunderland (as seen by all in the Sunderland ‘Til I Die docuseries) as a youngster to go to Bordeaux, who now find themselves in the fourth tier of French football.
But there are parallels to Solanke. Maja is 26, no spring chicken, much like Solanke who had to make his way back up the levels after his big early-career move to Liverpool did not work out. They are also similar in profiles yet sufficiently apart in levels for Tottenham to be able to convince Maja to make the jump from a mid-table Championship side.
With time not exactly on his side the way it was five years ago, the Nigerian forward would back himself to get remain at the top level for longer if he managed to get some miles on Premier League pitches.
