West Ham United head coach Graham Potter was full of praise for his team as a whole after our 3-2 win over Fulham on Tuesday night.
Graham Potter has made an instant impact in charge of West Ham.
The Hammers were exceptional during the first 60 minutes of our FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa, and there were some really positive moments against Fulham on Tuesday as well.
One of the big things I have noticed about the new West Ham head coach is his incredibly infectious positivity.
Potter has spoken very highly of numerous West Ham players already during his short tenure at the London Stadium.
The football has been much easier on the eye but more importantly, the players have actually put in real shifts for him during his first two games in charge.
And guess what, a more intense, organised press in numbers has actually yielded results for us!
Graham Potter really impressed by ‘aggressive’ West Ham ace
The Hammers suffered during long periods of the game against Fulham at the London Stadium.
However, I’m convinced that we would have lost that match comfortably, had Julen Lopetegui or David Moyes been in charge.
The West Ham players dug in and they earned a vital three points in the end.
After the game, Potter spoke to reporters, and shared his thoughts on the game.
He offered praise for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and the way that he aggressively took the fight to Fulham, as quoted by WHUFC.com:
“We ended up a little bit passive. I think we needed to get the crowd [up] and we needed to get more into some duels and some contact with them.“
“So we moved Mo [Kudus] a little bit up and he helped us, and Aaron [Wan-Bissaka] was more aggressive.“
“So they were really, really good.“
Potter was spot on there. The aggressiveness with which Wan-Bissaka pressed and engaged in duels with his opponents really was fantastic to see.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka to flourish under Graham Potter
The 27-year-old right-back never fulfilled his full potential with Lopetegui at the helm.
That was mostly down to the Spaniard’s insistence on deploying him as an advanced wing-back.
It was baffling really. Lopetegui had one of the very best defensive full-baks in the Premier League and he used him more as an attacking player.
Now the former Manchester United player should flourish in Potter’s complex system.
He is a lot better technically than many people give him credit for, and he will play a vital role for the Hammers over the next few years or so.
Wan-Bissaka can offer us a real outlet down the right-hand flank, whilst tucking inside if Potter demands that he invert from the right-back position.
Also, his exceptional recovery pace will enable us to press higher up the pitch, as and when the game-state demands us to.
I’m expecting to see big things from the 27-year-old with Potter now at the helm. His performance against Fulham gave us all a glimpse of what to expect.
