Maxwel Cornet has been informed by newly appointed Southampton manager Ivan Juric that his time at the club is over.
With West Ham’s small squad and injuries to key players, many assumed the Ivory Coast international might have had a chance to revive his career under new manager Graham Potter.
However, a senior source at West Ham told Claret and Hugh, “We don’t want him back and are trying to find him a club where he’s in the shop window and plays.”
Cornet, who has played in various positions across his career, including left wing, right wing, left full-back, and central striker, was most effective as a forward for Burnley in the 2021-2022 season, scoring nine goals in 26 league appearances.
Since joining West Ham in 2022 for £17m, Cornet has struggled with form and injuries, managing only 21 league appearances before being loaned to Southampton in summer 2024. During his time at Southampton, he has played just twice and is the second-highest-paid player at the club, earning £65k a week behind Joe Aribo.
Although a few Championship clubs have expressed interest, Cornet’s significant wages and a contract running until June 2026 mean he may need to accept a substantial pay cut to secure a move.
Now 28, Cornet’s stock has declined, and it remains to be seen whether West Ham can arrange a loan or permanent transfer for the player
