Prior to signing Randal Kolo Muani on loan from Paris Saint-Germain this week, Juventus made a last-ditch attempt to try and sanction one Manchester United star’s arrival.
While the Italian giants retain their interest in the exiled Marcus Rashford, it was Joshua Zirkzee whom they’d set their sights on to bolster Thiago Motta’s frontline this month.
As such, Fabrizio Romano has revealed today that Juventus made a formal proposal to United, which involved them taking Zirkzee on loan and covering his salary. There was no buy option included, meaning the Dutchman would’ve returned to Old Trafford at the end of the campaign.
Ultimately, he informed the board of his desire to stay and fight for his place under Ruben Amorim, prompting United to reject the Old Lady’s offer.
United were right to keep Zirkzee – he’s on the up
He has since enjoyed something of a revival in form, with fans now calling for him to be granted a run of starts due to his counterpart Rasmus Hojlund’s lacklustre showings.
Zirkzee’s performances off the bench have proven hugely impactful to the games he’s featured in – including last night’s dramatic, Amad Diallo-inspired win over Southampton. The 23-year-old featured for only 37 minutes, yet recorded four touches in the box, three ball recoveries, two chances created, two take-ons and one shot.
Last Sunday, he scored the winning spot-kick in the penalty shootout against Arsenal to book the Reds’ spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup and rightfully lapped up the celebrations with the travelling supporters post-match. Hopefully, he can become an integral cog in Amorim’s project in M16.
