Chelsea are making moves this January, although not always the ones that were expected.
We were heavily linked with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi at the start of the window, but have ended up with a different ex-Cobham Palace defender instead. Perhaps realising that Guehi would be hard to prise away in a winter window, we instead recalled Trevoh Chalobah.
It’s a controversial move, not least because of how the Blues are perceived to have messed their academy product around over the years, constantly trying to sell or loan him and never giving him credit for his excellent performances when in the team.
You can’t expect a club to put a player’s career ahead of their own interests, but still – there’s a limit.
Chalobah set for another year of confusion after recall
According to Graeme Bailey, who spoke exclusively to the Chelsea Chronicle, things could yet get worse for Chalobah however. Despite this recall, he’s still not viewed as a long term option for Chelsea. Next summer, we’ll be back to watching him get hawked around it seems:
“As it stands, from my understanding, Chalobah from his side and the club’s side is not deemed to have a long-term future at the club, which I guess makes his recall all the more strange,” Bailey wrote.
“He was contacted by the club, he was told he was coming. He’s never going to kick off about playing for Chelsea because he loves Chelsea, although he doesn’t necessarily think he’ll be there beyond the summer. Does Maresca think he’s better than Disasi and Tosin? Quite possibly, but it’s still not the long-term answer.
“I suspect if he does really well there’ll be calls for him to stay there permanently. That isn’t part of the plan at the moment, but that may change in the next six months.”
