Contrary to the scoreline, Bayern Munich put in a dominant display and with better finishing (and a more favourable referee) ultimately could have won the game by a three or four goal margin.
Here are the biggest takeaways from a Bavarian victory at the Allianz.
Leon Goretzka still has something to offer this team
After a tumultuous start to the season filled with countless links away from the club, including Bayern openly stating their desire to offload the 29-year-old midfielder, Leon Goretzka has made a statement of his own.
A near perfect passing display, combative energy in defence and a brace to top it all off, Goretzka capped a perfectly rounded midfield performance.
Now the question that seems to have plagued Goretzka for the majority of his career remains: can he stay consistent?
Well, only time will tell, but one certainly hopes Vincent Kompany will continue to give the midfielder the chance to prove himself week in and week out.
Bayern must secure Joshua Kimmich’s contract extension
Joshua Kimmich has, oddly, been a polarising figure at Bayern in the past few years. Often criticised for under par and inconsistent performances, the German national team captain has had a point to prove and boy is he proving it.
Kimmich has been immaculate this season, and against VfL Wolfsburg, he capped another brilliant display, picking up an assist and even scoring an eventually disallowed goal.
The 29-year-old’s set of skills are absolutely crucial to Bayern and Vincent Kompany’s style of play. It seems absurd that the club was reportedly willing to let him go ahead of the season. Thank fate they didn’t.
Bayern need to do everything in their power to secure the midfield maestro’s extension.
Kingsley…come on!
Bar his finishing, Kingsley Coman actually had a decent game. The French winger was dangerous throughout the game, constantly causing the opposition defence headaches.
On to the elephant in the room…his finishing. Simply dreadful.
Coman had two one on one opportunities and managed to bottle both. The first, a decent save by Wolfsburg’s Kamil Grabara. The second, a poorly placed curling shot meant for the bottom right corner, but ultimately sailing wide of the mark.
It’s a shame Coman wasn’t able to tuck away his chances, because if he was able to, it would have marked a lovely display and perhaps could have cemented his spot in Kompany’s starting eleven, where the left wing spot is still up for grabs.
There are definitely positives from Coman’s display, but his shortcomings in front of goal are frighteningly obvious. The 28-year-old will have to find his shooting boots as soon as possible, or else he’ll be finding himself on the bench.
