As a regular for Bayern II in the 2023/24 season and even making into the senior team’s matchday squad once, Max Scholze seemed ready to take the next step from the Regionalliga. Bayern Munich agreed. Ergo, a loan to 3. Liga side SC Verl for the 2024/25 season seemed like a good move for the 19-year-old right back. His time at the club started well enough, too, appearing in both of the club’s opening fixtures before an ankle injury disrupted his momentum and saw him struggle for game time for the rest of the Hinrunde, playing just 131 total minutes in 19 matches.
Having seen Scholze struggle for game time at SC Verl, Bayern announced via their campus twitter account that the club had made the decision to bring the defender back to Bayern II. Interestingly, Verl sporting director Sebastian Lange did not seem happy with the decision: “We accept the decision that Max returns to Munich to gain more match practice,” he said, via @iMiaSanMia_GER. “His time with us was extremely unfortunate due to the early injury. Nevertheless, he always gave it his all and showed his best side.”
Though the move was likely made to give Scholze the game time he needs, Bayern were likely also looking to bolster the U-23’s full back depth. After left back Adam Aznou became a full-time member of the senior team and right back Vincent Manuba suffered an ACL injury, the depth at full back is extremely thin. Bringing back Scholze will help the team and the game time will hopefully aid the player, as well.
However, could and should Bayern have promoted one of the four right backs in the U-19s instead and spread out game time between the players currently at the club? Yeah, they absolutely should have.
