Arsenal-linked Matheus Cunha has hit back at claims that he went straight down the tunnel following Monday’s defeat to Chelsea, with his manager among those to criticise him for it.
Matheus Cunha has been a fan-favourite at Wolves for most of this season, scoring 10 goals and assisting a further four despite his team struggling for form and slipping towards the relegation zone.
Yet his image appeared to take a hit on Monday, as journalists including Liam Keen of the Express & Star reported that Cunha’s body language had been “so poor” during Wolves’ 3-1 defeat, and that he’d gone “straight down the tunnel” after the game.
Recent links with a transfer to Arsenal perhaps haven’t helped either, with Cunha stalling on a new contract despite reaching a verbal agreement with his club.
When questioned afterwards about Cunha’s apparent decision to go straight down the tunnel, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira responded: “This is something I cannot understand.”
“I don’t like this body language,” Pereira continued. “I want someone, as a captain, trying to help the team – running, suffering and fighting all together. But this is something I can understand (this time). Next time, I won’t understand.
“If we start complaining about this and that, this is not the way. He is committed to Wolves but when you keep hearing about other clubs, then it is human [to be distracted].
“But he needs to put his mind on his targets and increase his level after injury and help his team again with his quality.”
Cunha himself claims the accusations of his early exit weren’t even true to begin with.
“Liar,” Cunha wrote on Twitter in response to Keen’s post. “I went to applaud them (the fans), congratulated the referees and the opposing players. Then I went to the tunnel. Don’t ever come and ask me to give you an interview again.”
Though some initially doubted the authenticity of Cunha’s Twitter account, it’s the same account Wolves have regularly tagged in posts about him for the last two years.
Whether Cunha really did go straight down the tunnel or not, the current drama likely isn’t doing much to convince him to stick around.
