What.
Happened.
Anyone who missed Bayern Munich’s 3-0 humbling at the hands of Feyenoord on Wednesday was likely stunned into silence at the sight of the scoreline.
For Bayern’s part though, they are handling it, players and staff, with as much of an even keel as they can muster — despite a suddenly precarious position in this year’s Champions League reckoning.
Whereas with a win the Bavarians were likely careening into the next round, they are now more likely to face a play-off…with a possibility still of crashing out completely if things continue to go awry.
C’est la vie, right?
“We had imagined things differently today, but that’s part of football,” CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said in post-match comments captured via @iMiaSanMia. “Vincent [Kompany] already said in the press conference that Feyenoord deserved their win. They took their few chances and we didn’t take our many chances. I looked at the 70th minute and we had 27-4 shots, but that doesn’t help when the ball doesn’t go in. It’s very annoying because we had hoped to take a big step toward the top eight today. There’s still another game at home against Bratislava, but we have to be realistic — it’s very difficult to finish in the top 8 now. That’s part of it. We’ll take on the playoffs and see which team is awaiting us.
“We have the chance on Saturday in Freiburg to at least show that we can do better, that we can take our chances and not make it easy to the opponent through individual mistakes. Dear team, you tried everything today especially in the second half, but it wasn’t meant to be. We wouldn’t have scored a goal even if we kept playing for another two hours. It is what it is. Now we look ahead and I’m certain that we’ll do better.”
Another two hours? It certainly felt that way…
But now the slate is clean. And SC Freiburg and Slovan Bratislava, Bayern’s next two opponents, are likely to bear the brunt of what is sure to be a ferocious response.
