Bayern Munich shook off the dust from the midweek Champions League loss at Feyenoord with their 2-1 win at SC Freiburg. A first half goal from Harry Kane and second half header from Kim min-Jae saw that Mattias Ginter’s header in 68th minute was nothing more than a consolation for Freiburg.
The home side certainly made it a cagey ending for the Rekordmeister, but Vincent Kompany will take the tricky three points away from home that keeps Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga table with the added bonus of Bayer Leverkusen dropping points at RB Leipzig with their 2-2 draw.
For Kane, his well-taken strike in the 15th minute after Eric Dier found him in acres of space was his first goal from open play in over two months. All of the goals he has scored in the past two months have been from the penalty spot, which sparked the suggestion that he was going through a bit of a drought, questioning his form. He put all that talk to bed with his strike, which got Bayern off on the right foot inside of the opening 20 minutes at Europa Park.
After the match, Kompany explained that, despite Kane going through a long stretch of not scoring from open play, that he never once doubted the England skipper and knew he would rediscover the form he was experiencing earlier this season. “Harry never doubted himself. He stayed calm and kept working hard. Of course we can speak about his goal today, but he also defended deep and helped the team a lot. That speaks of his character. He really gives everything for the team to be successful,” the Belgian manager explained (via @iMiaSanMia).
Especially now that Omar Marmoush has left Eintracht Frankfurt for Manchester City, Kane is the clear favorite and frontrunner to win the Torjägerkanone as he now has 17 league goals so far this season. The next highest tally behind Kane is Leverkusen’s Patrick Schick with 13 goals and then Mainz’s Jonathan Burkhardt who has 12 goals.
