David Moyes failing to play £25 million West Ham United man in his correct position is an absolute travesty.
West Ham took on Leeds at the London Stadium this afternoon, and David Moyes made six changes from the side that beat AZ Alkmaar in midweek.
The likes of Pablo Fornals came into the side, whilst Tomas Soucek kept his place in midfield.
The Spaniard has barely played in the Premier League for the Hammers over the past six or seven months. Moyes did praise Fornals in his press conference yesterday though, highlighting how highly he rates the 27-year-old.
It’s just so frustrating that the Scot doesn’t play the West Ham man in his correct position…
David Moyes failing to play £25 million West Ham man in correct position is an absolute travesty
The Hammers signed Fornals from Villarreal for around £25 million in the summer of 2019 (The Telegraph).
The Spaniard was a central midfield play-maker before he joined West Ham, and under Manuel Pellegrini he mostly played in a central role.
However, since Moyes took over at the London Stadium in December 2019, the 27-year-old has exclusively been used as a left winger – a position where he is totally ineffective because of his lack of pace.
What Fornals does have is technical ability in abundance and a great eye for a killer pass.
The Spaniard proved today that he does his best work centrally, despite being shunted out on the left wing again.
When he did drift inside, he played an incredible ball through to Jarrod Bowen, who subsequently crossed for Declan Rice to smash home our equaliser.
The fact that West Ham manager David Moyes doesn’t use Fornals instead of Soucek in a midfield three alongside Lucas Paqueta and Rice is an absolute travesty.
If the Hammers boss really wants to take his team to the next level and evolve into more of a possession based side, then Fornals absolutely has to start in the middle of the park in Soucek’s place.
He offers us so much more than the Czech Republic international does in the final third. However, Moyes loves Soucek’s aerial ability at both ends of the pitch. It’s clear to see that we won’t ever see the best of Fornals while Moyes is at the club and that’s a huge shame as far as I’m concerned.
