Tom Cannon will be given the chance to show Sean Dyche he is capable of leading the line for Everton this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The 20-year-old enjoyed a hugely impressive loan spell at Preston North End during the latter part of last season, scoring eight goals in 20 Championship appearances.
And that has led to multiple second-tier clubs – including Preston – registering their interest in striking a similar temporary deal next term.
However, Football Insider understands that Dyche is keen to run the rule over Cannon in pre-season to judge whether he is instead ready to play a role in the Premier League.
That aligns firmly with the player’s desire to show can make an impact in the first team of the club whose academy he first joined as a 10-year-old.
The striker will get the chance to do that when Everton’s pre-season kicks off next month with a training camp on the French/Swiss border.
A friendly against Stade Nyonnais will form part of that trip, while the Toffees have also announced that they will contest games against Tranmere, Bolton and Stoke prior to the new campaign getting under way.
Cannon recently spoke of his determination to pull on the royal blue jersey and score a senior goal at Goodison Park for the first time.
He told the Toffees’ official website: “It’s my aim to score in front of the crowd at Goodison. There’s nothing more that I want to do.
“I’ve gone out on loan and scored at Deepdale. But I know it would be a different buzz scoring at Goodison Park in front of 40,000.
“I’m looking forward to that and I will try as hard as I can do that.”
