A new report claims West Ham want to sign Atletico Madrid midfield powerhouse Geoffrey Kondogbia after David Moyes was linked last year.
If you thought it was a busy start to the summer transfer window for West Ham then think again but it seems it’s only just starting to motor.
Declan Rice is edging closer to leaving the Hammers.
And it was reported last week that ‘work has been going on behind the scenes’ at West Ham to identify a host of targets as potential replacements for the captain.
West Ham are being linked with a plethora of midfield stars from a host of leagues.
Report: West Ham want to sign Atletico Madrid midfield powerhouse Geoffrey Kondogbia after David Moyes was linked last year
Yunus Musah, Joao Palhinha, James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez are just some of the names being mentioned as possible replacements for Rice at West Ham this summer.
Now there is another name in the frame it seems. But it’s not a new one.
Because a report claims West Ham want to sign Atletico Madrid midfield powerhouse Geoffrey Kondogbia after David Moyes was linked last year.
We reported here on Hammers News last year that Moyes explored the possibility of signing 6ft 2in central midfielder Kondogbia from Atletico.
In the end the move did not materialise and the now 30-year-old remained in Spain.
Unbelievable Geoff
It seems Moyes remains interested in the possibility of bringing the former Valencia star to West Ham, though.
Bolstering central midfield is a top priority for the Hammers this summer with Manuel Lanzini also leaving having been released.
The reports from Spain claim West Ham are battling Lyon for powerful midfielder Kondogbia.
And it is stated that ‘whoever meets the asking price first will get the player’.
Report: West Ham battling Lyon for Atletico star
Kondogbia struggled for game time last season and suffered with injuries, making just 14 starts for Atletico in all competitions.
On paper the ex Inter Milan, Monaco and Sevilla star has all the ingredients needed to be a hit for West Ham in the Premier League.
But his age – he turns 31 next season – does not suggest long term succession planning from Moyes.
If he was signed in addition to a younger midfielder then it could be a shrewd signing for the Hammers.
Kondogbia is a former France international who switched allegiance to Central African Republic in 2018.
