Newcastle are trying to gazump West Ham for two big David Moyes midfield targets with a different type of deal.
Newcastle United look to have started spending big money in the transfer market and it may mean a role reversal for the Magpies and West Ham.
West Ham fans who have followed the transfer windows since Eddie Howe’s arrival at St James’ Park will know that wherever the Hammers go, Newcastle seem to follow.
At one stage last summer Newcastle’s interest in West Ham’s transfer dealings and targets was described as an ‘obsession’.
But given their vast wealth and having qualified for the Champions League, West Ham may to accept it will be Newcastle leading the way in the market while David Moyes follows.

Well there is a bit of both at play in the latest transfer news emerging from Tyneside it seems.
Because Newcastle are trying to gazump West Ham for two big Moyes midfield targets with a different type of deal.
With Declan Rice on the verge of completing his British record £105m plus move to Arsenal, West Ham are looking to sign at least two midfielders to replace their captain.
Particularly as Manuel Lanzini has been released too.
Howe clearly feels central midfield is the priority area for Newcastle to strengthen as well having completed the stunning signing of AC Milan star Sandro Tonali.
Newcastle are not done there, though, and it directly impacts West Ham’s own reported transfer plans.
Longstanding Moyes targets now in Howe’s sights
West Ham have been heavily linked with both Conor Gallagher and Kalvin Phillips as replacements for Rice for some time now.
They are said to be two of the names on Moyes’ shortlist for Rice replacements with uncertainty over their respective futures at Chelsea and Man City.
Newcastle have emerged as a problem, though.
Because The Telegraph claims Newcastle are currently looking into loan deals for Phillips and Gallagher.
The report claims Newcastle are actually operating within a tight budget due to FFP and have spent a big chunk of that on £55m Tonali.
‘A lot of work still to do and very little money to do it’
So while West Ham were looking at potentially difficult permanent deals for Phillips or Gallagher, Howe is trying to beat Moyes to the players by attempting loan deals instead.
“A right-sided centre-back would appear to be the most pressing concern, but the initial plan this summer was to also add a left-back and two midfield players, not one,” The Telegraph states.
“That leaves the club with a lot of work still to do — and supposedly very little money to do it. Newcastle are keeping a close watch on Phillips’ situation at Manchester City in case he is told he can leave later this summer. Phillips has been adamant that he wants to fight for his place under Pep Guardiola, but things could change when he returns for pre-season training if he is told his game time will once again be limited.
“Newcastle have enquired about signing Gallagher from Chelsea in each of the past two transfer windows, but it has been reported that new manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to give the England international a fresh chance to prove himself at Stamford Bridge.”
