Paul Merson feels the signing of Harry Kane “takes Chelsea to challenging for the league title again” as he “cannot for the life of me” see him moving to Bayern Munich.
There’s rarely a summer transfer window in which there isn’t interest from a big name in Kane. That owes to the fact he’s been one of the Premier League’s best players for much of his time in the top flight.
This summer, he’s been a target of Manchester United and Bayern Munich. The interest follows a season in which he netted 30 league goals for the second time in his career.
A move to United will be tricky, given Daniel Levy apparently doesn’t want to see his star move within the Premier League.
Bayern have also found things tough to this point, as they had their first bid turned down, given it was below Tottenham’s £100million asking price.
Sky Sports pundit Merson feels there’s no chance Kane makes the move to the Bundesliga giants even if they lodge an acceptable offer, citing the striker’s hunt for the all-time Premier League goals record as the reason.
“I cannot for the life of me see Kane join Bayern Munich. Why would you get to within 47 goals of Alan Shearer’s Premier League scoring record and then go to Bayern to help them win the Bundesliga for the 97th time on the trot?” he said.
Merson did, however, suggest a move to Chelsea could be beneficial for both Kane and the Blues, as it would elevate them back to the upper echelons of the table and allow Kane to keep banging the goals in, despite more chance of bagging at Spurs this season than last.
“He scored 30 league goals last season for Tottenham. And who’s playing with him at Spurs? He has to do it all himself virtually. If he stays at Spurs next season with James Maddison now there, I dread to think how many goals he will get,” Merson said.
“The only player out there who takes Chelsea to another level is Harry Kane, he’s the only one. He takes Chelsea to challenging for the league title again.
“If Chelsea buy Kane, something would be wrong if they didn’t finish in the top four, that’s how big a difference Kane would make.”
Whether or not that deal is at all viable is another question entirely. However, it’s not hard to see how Kane would improve the performances of essentially any side, anywhere.
