A fake post about Declan Rice’s dad snubbing ‘plastic’ Man City has gone viral with an Arsenal medical booked as his West Ham exit nears.
West Ham fans have long known that captain Declan Rice would be leaving this summer and Arsenal finally look set to complete the deal imminently.
While there is no great rivalry between West Ham and Arsenal, Hammers supporters have made it clear they would have found it much more palatable had Rice joined Manchester City or a foreign club.
At one stage Man City appeared set to beat Arsenal to the West Ham skipper after gazumping the Gunners’ second bid.
But they dropped out of the race when it became increasingly clear Rice wanted to remain in London and work with Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.
The apparent Manchester City snub left some fans scratching their heads. After all when Man City enter the race for a player they usually get him.
Rice said he wanted Champions League football and to compete for silverware. And many West Ham fans simply don’t believe Arsenal offer any guarantees on that front. Whereas Man City under Pep Guardiola certainly do.
As West Ham fans will know, Rice’s agent is his father Sean Rice.
And as the deal to take his son to Arsenal edges ever closer to completion, many fans have been caught out by a Tweet.
A fake post about Rice’s dad snubbing ‘plastic’ Man City has gone viral with an Arsenal medical booked as his West Ham exit nears.
A Twitter account impersonating transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano said Rice’s dad and agent Sean did not want his son to join a ‘plastic club’ like Man City – of whom he has been ‘very critical’.
The Tweet also signs off with Romano’s catchphrase ‘here we go’ signifying a done deal.
But tellingly the Twitter handle for the account gives the game away with a different spelling of the surname.
Some people clearly have too much time on their hands.
But it has caught plenty of supporters of West Ham, Arsenal and Man City out – being viewed nearly 3.5 million times, attracting over 1,000 comments, nearly 4,500 retweets and getting nearly 45,000 likes.
What is not fake news, though, is that Rice is set to have his Arsenal medical in the next 72 hours.
That’s according to a new update from Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth this afternoon.
Sheth confirmed personal terms have been agreed between Arsenal and Rice and the medical is being booked to take place over the next three days.
