Ange Postecoglou to determine Tottenham Hotspur formation after working with players
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou will decide which formation to play with the North London side after taking a look at the players at his disposal.
The Australian is known to play a more attacking brand of football with a 4-3-3 setup. At Celtic, the gaffer thrived and found success playing a similar style of play. But it remains to be seen whether the same ideas will apply at Spurs.
Speaking during a Q&A on the club’s YouTube channel (h/t Metro), Postecoglou is open to the idea of being flexible at Tottenham. He will look to play to the strengths of the squad he will have next season.
“I think if you look at my career I’ve sort of played different formations. A lot of that depends on the players you have at your disposal.
“For me the key thing will be to have a real good look at the playing group and see what strengths they have and then come up with a formation that will bring the best out of them.”
Spurs have been used to playing a different brand of football under the likes of Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte. The trio preferred a more defensive setup of the team.
Under the Italian manager, we mostly played with five defenders and three attackers. Most of the times, the North London side looked to score goals on the counter rather than being proactive in the final third of the pitch.
Mauricio Pochettino was the last manager to implement more forward-thinking ideas at the club. Under the Argentine, we enjoyed several successful years and even reached the Champions League final.
Postecoglou seems to be cut from the same cloth. However, the players will evidently need time to adjust and implement the Australian manager’s tactics, whatever they may be.
Under Conte, Tottenham did more work off the ball than on it. We surrendered possession a lot to the opposition. Unfortunately, the Italian was unable to bring much success to the North London side.
