Xavi eyes Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso for ‘historic season’ at Barcelona
Barcelona manager Xavi is keen on acquiring the services of Tottenham Hotspur star Giovani Lo Celso this summer, according to AS reporter Javi Miguel on Twitter (h/t The Sun).
The Blaugrana won the league title under the Spanish manager in the 2022/23 term. However, the La Liga outfit’s head coach is looking to strengthen his squad further and has identified the North London side’s Argentine as one of the signings to help achieve a ‘historic season’.
To that end, Xavi has urged Barcelona president Joan Laporta to get a hold of the 27-year-olds signature in the ongoing transfer window. However, the Spanish giants will face competition from Aston Villa and Real Betis, who also have the midfielder on their radar.
Tottenham initially got Lo Celso on loan from the Verdiblancos before making his move permanent. Unfortunately, the Argentina international has been unable to make an impact at the North London side over the years.
The midfielder has spent the last 18 months on loan at Villarreal. He played under Unai Emery, who is currently the head coach of the Villa Park side, at the Yellow Submarine.
As things stand, Barcelona already have an abundance of talent in their engine room with the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Gavi and Frank Kessie. Yet, they still want Spurs’ 27-year-old.
It makes one wonder why Lo Celso has not been able to get going at Tottenham when a team like the Blaugrana are interested in him. The midfielder is also a starter for Lionel Scaloni in the Argentina setup.
