Board confidant’s interesting response to a claim that £7m West Ham man Michail Antonio is in Saudi Arabia talks.
Ageing West Ham striker Michail Antonio was linked with a move away in the January transfer window.
Antonio was linked with Everton, Wolves and even Chelsea back in the winter window in the face of competition from Gianluca Scamacca and Danny Ings.
But he stayed at West Ham, won his place back and played a key role in the club winning their first major trophy for 43 years.
Antonio turns 34 next season and has been linked with a move away again in the summer transfer window.
The Daily Mail recently claimed West Ham boss David Moyes is looking to revamp his forward line this summer. And it certainly needs it based on what Moyes’ side served up for most of last season’s Premier League campaign.
The report stated that Turkish giants Galatasaray are looking to sign Antonio, who has one year left on his current West Ham contract.
Then earlier this evening, a report from Saudi Arabia claimed Al Ettifaq – now managed by Steven Gerrard – are ‘in advanced negotiations with Jamaican striker Michel Antonio to sign him’.
Now a board confidant has issued an interesting response to the claim that £7m West Ham man Antonio is in Saudi Arabia talks.
Antonio has served West Ham well since signing from Forest for just £7m back in 2015. He has cemented his place in Hammers history by becoming the club’s leading Premier League goalscorer.
But insider Sean Whetstone, who has close links to some members of the Hammers hierarchy, claims if Antonio is in talks with Gerrard’s new side then West Ham don’t know anything about it.
“West Ham are NOT in any talks with Al Ettifaq over the sale of Hammer Michail Antonio so any potential deal can’t be at an advanced stage as reported,” Whetstone said.
“Whether Antonio’s representatives are in early talks with the Saudi club managed by Steven Gerrard is unknown by West Ham!”
With just one year left on his deal and given his age, West Ham should not hold out much hope of a big transfer fee if the Saudi club are in for Antonio.
But many fans believe the club is long overdue a changing of the guard up front with a massive over-reliance on Antonio in recent years.
West Ham missed out on Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting and have been linked with the likes of Armando Broja and Habib Diallo.
