Tottenham Hotspur set to sign Ashley Phillips from Blackburn Rovers
Ashley Phillips could be the latest arrival at Tottenham Hotspur as Blackburn Rovers have been hit with a financial snag.
According to the Mirror journalist James Nursey, Blackburn’s Indian owners have imposed a 20% pay cut and have sanctioned player sales amidst a financial crisis. The Championship club’s loss could be Spurs’ gain.
The journalist added in a follow-up tweet, saying that Spurs are set to capitalise on the Rovers’ difficulties and snap up Phillips on July 19. The deal would be so quick that the player will be able to join his team on their pre-season tour of Asia/Oceania.
That was unexpected. It remains to be seen if we can sign the 18-year-old for a cut-price fee. But given Rovers’ difficulties and their potential decision to sell one of their brightest youngsters, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they ask for a respectable fee.
Phillips to Spurs?
Phillips stands at 1.92 meters tall and is one of the finest up-and-coming defenders in the second division. He is, of course, a prospect for the future and it shouldn’t give Tottenham any outs from signing an actually world-class defender this summer.
The 3-2 loss against West Ham United served as a reminder of Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga’s defensive fragilities. Cristian Romero deserves a world-class partner in defence.
Phillips, if he does come to N17, would be better off spending some time with the youth team before making the step up. He has nevertheless represented Blackburn 14 times at the senior level to date.
We have had a strong summer so far, signing Manor Solomon, James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario while making Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro’s deals permanent. These are players that will strengthen the current senior team.
