An update on West Ham United’s training ground facilities will have fans cringing as a board confidant lifts the lid on new council decision.
Staying in the Premier League last season was all that mattered for West Ham amid the struggles of last season.
They managed that and managed to turn a disappointing season into an unforgettable one by lifting the club’s first major trophy for 43 years too.
And the owners must take their share of credit for that, just as they get their fair share of criticism when things aren’t going well.
But if the Hammers continue to only focus on what is right in front of them and going year by year, the club will never truly grow and be able to compete with the elite over a sustained period.
It will always be peaks and troughs for West Ham with that approach, lurching from the sublime to the ridiculous – as last season proved.

If the lifeblood of a football club is the fans and the stadium the heart and soul then the training ground is the nerve-centre for any club.
And West Ham’s training ground facilities have been a running joke among fans for too long. In reality it is no laughing matter, though.
West Ham’s training facilities – at both Rush Green and the former first team base at Chadwell Heath – have long been criticised by fans, past players and managers.

They are a constant source of embarrassment for supporters in comparison to other clubs. So imagine how the players feel.
At Chadwell Heath players who complained were famously told by long-serving club staff ‘It was good enough for Bobby Moore’.
David Moyes has spoken in the past about wanting the Hammers to use some of the money invested by Czech billionaire co-owner Daniel Kretinsky to improve the training ground.
But it seems there are no grand plans to emulate what is now the majority of Premier League clubs by giving the Hammers’ Rush Green base a much-needed overhaul.

One of the biggest sources of embarrassment for some West Ham fans about Rush Green are the unsightly grey portakabins.
Now Sean Whetstone has highlighted a document from Havering Council which confirms West Ham have been granted planning permission to retain the rented buildings for another two years.
“Havering Council have approved planning permission for West Ham to retain rented portakabins at Rush Green training ground for 104 weeks,” Whetstone said.
“If you look at photos it tells you exactly what they are used for! The media centre, a small ticket office and club shop plus some storage.”
