The Telegraph has lifted the lid on a major double blow for Man United and West Ham after a cruel twist means disappointment for both clubs.
West Ham’s painfully slow summer transfer window has seen the club resort to bidding for a host of players in the hope of getting some deals done.
One of those players is Manchester United star Scott McTominay as David Moyes looks to bring in two midfielders to replace Declan Rice.
Earlier this week Sky Sports stated West Ham had held initial talks with Man United over the signing McTominay and Harry Maguire.
“Early suggestions indicate a gap in valuations for both players and Sky Sports News has been told United see Maguire and McTominay as top players and very important members of the squad,” the report states.
“While they are not encouraging offers, it’s thought it would require very big bids for United to even consider a sale.”

That left West Ham fans – and indeed Man United supporters too – wondering what kind of figure the Hammers would have to get to for McTominay.
And they got their answer – £45m – with a big gap in valuation exposed by a source close to the board.
Speculation over West Ham’s interest in McTominay has not dissipated, though. And many on both the West Ham and Manchester United side feel a deal could be done somewhere between £30-40m.
It may all be a moot point now, though.
Because The Telegraph has lifted the lid on a major double blow for Man United and West Ham after a cruel twist means disappointment for both clubs.
The site claims highly-rated young Red Devils midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has suffered a serious ankle injury which will see him miss the first half of the season.
And the report claims that has ‘complicated’ and likely killed any prospect of Erik ten Hag letting McTominay join West Ham.
“Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has been ruled out for the first part of next season in a bitter cruel setback that could have implications for the future of Scott McTominay…” reports the paper’s northern football correspondent James Ducker.
“(Man) United plan to sell Fred, who is not on the tour for personal reasons, and Donny van de Beek but Mainoo’s injury may force a rethink on McTominay, who is wanted by West Ham.
“Ten Hag is interested in Sofyan Amrabat but a move for the Fiorentina and Morocco midfielder would be more likely if McTominay is sold.”
