The Bayer Leverkusen horror show this afternoon was vital for West Ham United for three crucial reasons.
West Ham travelled out to Germany today for our final pre-season friendly before our new Premier League campaign kicks off next weekend with a trip to Bournemouth.
The Hammers were really poor during our clash with Rennes last weekend, and things were even worse out in Germany today. The football was absolutely dire, with no pace or dynamism whatever. Things have clearly become stale amongst the West Ham camp and things need to change urgently.
David Moyes has a huge task on his hands if he is to have his team ready for the new season. The players just seem to be miles off the pace at the moment.
Maybe, just maybe though, today’s result could end up being a good thing in the long run…

Bayer Leverkusen horror show was vital for West Ham for three crucial reasons
Firstly, the result and performance should be a huge kick up the backside for the Hammers owners.
This squad needs at least four or five top-class new players added to it if we are to be competitive on all fronts this season.
There is no reason why David Sullivan should not be investing at least £150 million in the playing staff.
Secondly, Moyes should now be under no illusions that his team do not need any new additions.
The Scot has been painfully slow in the transfer market before, leaving it until very late before he makes any new signings. He quite simply cannot afford to wait any longer, and today’s display should hammer home that point to him.
And finally, the players themselves just have to do better. The likes of Said Benrahma, Tomas Soucek, Fynn Downes, Lucas Paqueta, Angelo Ogbonna, Thilo Kehrer and Emerson Palmieri were just nowhere near good enough today.
Today should be a huge wakeup call to every single West Ham player that so much more is needed if we are to enjoy a successful 2023/24 campaign.
West Ham have come up against top quality opposition over the past seven days in the form of Bayer Leverkusen and Rennes, and the players and manager have been found out.
Hopefully today’s embarrassing performance will end up being a blessing in disguise in the long run.
