West Ham paid an initial £30.5m to sign Gianluca Scamacca from Sassuolo last summer.
But the move simply did not work out as he or the Hammers would have hoped.
Illness, injuries and a clear lack of research on the type of striker Scamacca is and what he would bring to the team left both the player and David Moyes frustrated.
The Italy forward has been linked with a third of the clubs in Serie A since changing agents midway through last season.
As reported by Hammers News, Atalanta entered the race thanks to Man United furnishing them with over £72m for Danish sensation Rasmus Hojlund.

And Scamacca will join Atalanta as their record signing at £27m including easily achievable add-ons.
West Ham also have a sell on clause in the deal as revealed by Hammers News.
Some fans are disappointed by the Scamacca sale.
But many supporters are glad to see the back of a player they feel showed very little desire, enthusiasm or effort during his brief spell in claret and blue.
Moyes criticised Scamacca publicly on several occasions for his lack of fitness and demanded he do more for the team.
Hammers News has it on good authority that Moyes was far from impressed with the Italian’s unwillingness to run the channels, chase balls and harry defenders.
And Michail Antonio effectively confirmed as much when he stated Scamacca was not a Moyes type of player and needed to play under a different system and style.
With Scamacca gone, West Ham are turning their attentions to signing a replacement.
Yesterday The Mirror claimed Moyes is eyeing up a move for Bournemouth forward Dominic Solanke.

According to the Cherries’ local paper The Daily Echo, which has strong sources inside the club, West Ham’s approach for Solanke has been rejected.
Solanke is not hugely prolific but works extremely hard for his team and does all those things Moyes loves to see from his strikers.
He has scored 56 goals and provided 27 assists in his 174 appearances for Bournemouth. Not the worst record.
But it is his work for the team, hold-up play and graft that has cemented his place as one of the first names on the team sheet in the past couple of years according to the local paper.
“Cherries have knocked back an approach from West Ham United for striker Dominic Solanke, The Daily Echo understands,” the report states.
“The Mirror reported on Saturday that West Ham had asked Cherries about the availability of Solanke, as they look for a replacement for the outgoing Gianluca Scamacca.
“The Echo understands the Hammers contacted Cherries late last month, but the Dorset club are keen to keep hold of the 25-year-old.”
Solanke penned a new four-year contract with Cherries last summer so would like cost West Ham well in excess of the £17.5m they paid Liverpool for the now 25-year-old back in 2019.
Whether West Ham try again or move on to other targets remains to be seen.
