Manchester City star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is reportedly considering his options this summer. The 32-year-old’s contract expires in 2025, and numerous Saudi Pro League clubs are monitoring his future, likely attempting to sign him once his contract with City expires. However, a move this summer could also be possible if De Bruyne decides to leave.
De Bruyne’s camp has reportedly held conversations with the upcoming Major League Soccer team San Diego FC. The San Diego-based team will join the MLS for the 2025 season as an expansion team. The Belgium international could potentially run down his contract with the Sky Blues and join San Diego FC in 2025.
There is also a strong possibility of the midfielder staying at Manchester City. Back in February, reports suggested that De Bruyne might sign a contract extension and retire at the club around the age of 35. However, Manchester City has historically been strict in negotiating new contracts with players in their 30s. While City wants to retain their talisman, the Belgian’s age could slightly lower the contract proposal.
De Bruyne has been with the club for nine years, and it would be understandable if he sought a new challenge. The midfield maestro joined Man City in 2015 for £55 million from Wolfsburg, a fee that made him the second most expensive player in British football history at that time. Despite initial doubts from many pundits, De Bruyne has proven himself as a legendary player for City.
During his nine years at the club, De Bruyne has won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five EFL Cups, and one UEFA Champions League trophy. He has also received numerous individual accolades, including the Premier League Player of the Season twice and the IFFHS Best Playmaker three times. The Belgian has been included in the FIFA FIFPRO World 11 four times and the Premier League Team of the Year five times.
While it is hoped that De Bruyne will stay at the club beyond next summer and possibly retire with Manchester City, this outcome currently appears unlikely. More news regarding his future should become available in the coming months.
