Manchester City attacking midfielder Phil Foden has been selected in the official Champions League team of the season.
UEFA’s Technical Observer panel was responsible for picking the XI and Foden was the only player from an English club included.
Borussia Dortmund’s Ian Maatsen (who is on loan from Chelsea) was also named in the team, along with three of his teammates: Gregor Kobel, Mats Hummels and Marcel Sabitzer.
Real Madrid’s Antonio Rudiger, Dani Carvajal, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr, as well as Paris Saint-Germain’s Vitinha and Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane were the other players chosen by the panel.
Foden’s performances in the Champions League
It is a testament to the England international’s impact that he was the only player selected by UEFA who didn’t play for one of the four semi-finalists.
Foden scored 5 goals and contributed 3 assists in 8 appearances for City. He got on the scoresheet against Real Madrid in the first leg of the quarter-final, the last 16 against Copenhagen, versus Young Boys, as well as both games against RB Leipzig in the group stages.
The 23-year-old also picked up assists against Red Star Belgrade, in the first match versus Leipzig and in the round of 16 first leg versus Copenhagen.
City will be keen to improve on this season’s showing in the competition
Being knocked out by eventual winners Real was hard to take but Pep Guardiola’s men know they were unlucky to be on the losing side. If they had won the shootout, they would likely have gone all the way to the final.
Fans will, of course, be hoping for a different outcome next year and, if it is to be Guardiola’s final season, there would be no better way than winning the club’s second Champions League crown at the Allianz Arena.
