Manchester City have “discussed” the possibility of signing Bayer Leverkusen wingback Jeremie Frimpong, according to The Athletic.
The Netherlands international has been the subject of conversation within the club’s recruitment department in recent months as they consider potential long-term replacements for Kyle Walker.
However, it is believed a bid for Frimpong is only likely if Walker were to leave the Etihad before the transfer window closes at the end of August.
The 34-year-old almost left for Bayern Munich last summer before being persuaded to stay by manager Pep Guardiola. He subsequently signed a contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2026.
Walker has, though, been linked with a switch to Saudi Arabia since then and, if that were to happen, it would then lead to the Cityzens making an offer for Frimpong.
City would be signing an attack-minded fullback
It must be said that Frimpong is not known for his defensive qualities, having spent much of his time playing further forward since Xabi Alonso was appointed Leverkusen head coach.
Last season, the Dutchman racked up 14 goals and 12 assists in 47 appearances. You would have questions about him being deployed in a back four.
Other Premier League clubs have been linked with Frimpong
Rivals Manchester United are believed to have kept in touch with the player’s entourage over the last twelve months, while Arsenal have also been credited with an interest.
It is believed that Frimpong still has a €40m (£34m) release clause in his contract. There were reports suggesting that it expired on June 14th but journalist Fabrizio Romano spoke out to say that the clause is “still valid.”
The fact that the 23-year-old remains available for an affordable price means it is unlikely that he will remain on the market for long. At the moment, it appears City are dragging their heels.
