Manchester City won’t have competition from Chelsea or Liverpool in the race for RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Dani Olmo, according to The Mirror.
Several Premier League and Spanish clubs are said to be contemplating whether to trigger the 26-year-old’s release clause before it expires on Monday.
However, it is believed that despite having shown interest in Olmo in the past, neither Chelsea nor Liverpool are likely to enter the running for his signature.
The Mirror don’t actually name any of the teams who could potentially table an offer but City have been the most heavily linked with the player, especially in the German press.
How much will Olmo cost?
The buyout fee is set at €60m (£51m) which seems like a good price based on the Spanish international’s performances at European Championships.
Olmo scored the winner against France in the semi-final on Tuesday evening, taking his total to 3 goals and 2 assists for the tournament; the highest number of goal contributions from any player.
Leipzig could still sell the City target even if the clause expires
It should be pointed out that Olmo’s performances for his country do eclipse his form for his club. A lot of that is due to injuries.
The playmaker was limited to 25 appearances in all competitions for Leipzig last season due to knee, shoulder and muscular problems. Consequently, Leipzig will still be open to selling the player even if nobody pays his release clause in time.
While the Bundesliga club may increase the asking price slightly, they may still only demand between £60m and £70m. It will be interesting to see what City do.
It has been assumed a bid for Olmo would be dependent on a midfielder, such as Kevin De Bruyne or Bernardo Silva, leaving the Etihad, but they are now in danger of losing out on a target if they don’t move quickly.
