Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling has decided to select four of his ex-Manchester City teammates in his all-time 5-a-side team.
The 29-year-old has played alongside some phenomenal footballers at other clubs, including Thiago Silva, Luis Suarez and Phillippe Coutinho, but the only non-City player he picked was Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard. Speaking to the Fubo YouTube channel, he said:
“Yeah, no goalkeeper. John Stones at the back, then I’d go [Steven] Gerrard, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and [Sergio] Aguero.”
It’s pretty bold to go without a keeper, but Sterling is obviously confident that the five he selected would be good enough to keep the ball and score more goals than their opponents!
A rollcall of legendary City figures
It’s not overstating things to say that Sterling has played alongside some of the best players in the history of the club. Aguero is the Cityzens’ all-time top scorer after all, while Silva and De Bruyne are among the greatest playmakers of the Premier League era.
The inclusion of John Stones may raise a few eyebrows, though, especially as manager Pep Guardiola didn’t pick him much in the second half of last season.
However, the 30-year-old has shown with England at the European Championships that he is top drawer defender when he is fit and available
Sterling’s memorable career at the Etihad
Not every supporter will agree but Sterling’s record during his seven years with City does put him right up there in terms of the best signings of the Sheikh Mansour era.
The England international racked up 131 goals and 73 assists in 339 appearances, which is not a bad return whatsoever. He will never be regarded as a legend mainly because of the way he left, but fans will have many fond memories from his time in Manchester regardless.
