Former Manchester City player and manager Stuart Pearce believes Dani Olmo would be a “big success” if he made the switch to the Etihad.
The Spaniard has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League champions in the German press, and Pearce claims the RB Leipzig midfielder could get even better if he works under Pep Guardiola:
“He played a real integral part in Spain’s success [at Euro 2024]. Pep has got a reputation of bringing players in that are good players and making them better players. So, it would be no surprise to me if he is a big success in the Premier League.”
Olmo’s €60m (£50.6m) release clause has now expired but it is believed that Leipzig are still willing to sell the 26-year-old for a similar fee.
Which club is the favourite to sign Olmo?
While both City and Chelsea have been credited with an interest in the playmaker, it does appear as if Barcelona are currently the frontrunners to secure his services.
However, the Catalan club have already had one offer rejected for Olmo and there are doubts over whether they can afford to match the player’s asking price without including significant add-ons.
Barca are also pursuing the Spaniard’s international teammate, Nico Williams, and it is felt that their interest in Olmo could cool if they get a deal for the Athletic Bilbao winger over the line.
Do City have plans to sign anyone else this summer?
Guardiola has been pretty open about the club’s activity in the transfer market. Speaking before the friendly against AC Milan, the City boss said that the club will only buy if players are sold:
“If someone leaves at the end, maybe [we will sign new players]. But if no one leaves, I think we will stay like we are.”
