Tottenham Hotspur have been looking to sign a midfielder in the ongoing summer transfer window as they look to build on the progress that Ange Postecoglou made at White Hart Lane in the last season. The North Londoners have been fortifying interests in multiple midfield dynamos along the off-season; however, none of those transfers have materialized with the commencement of the season just around the corner.
The Lilywhites have also lost Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, adding to the woes ahead of the upcoming season. Moreover, Gio Lo Celso has also been linked with a move away from the club, which adds to the needs at Tottenham.
The club had identified Conor Gallagher as a potential prime target coming into the summer transfer window; however, no move to N17 materialized for the England international despite aggressive links that insisted so.
Tottenham’s Gallagher dream shattered by Chelsea’s demands
The Australian gaffer wanted to team Solanke and Gallagher together at Spurs, per The Telegraph; however, the move did not come about.
This could be down to one particular criteria of the transfer—the money involved.
Daniel Levy had a particular price tag in mind and was willing to sit on the negotiations table hoping to land an agreement, while Chelsea did not want to see him go to a Premier League club unless a substantial premium is paid. The West Londoners did not quote Spurs a fee below £45m for the 24-year-old; however, in the contrast, they went on to agree to a £33.7m fee to sell Gallagher to Atletico Madrid.
Race against time
Chelsea have a history of being difficult to deal with when selling, and that could be attributable to how Arsenal and Manchester United caved into their transfer prices for Kai Havertz and Mason Mount last summer. While both clubs acquired top talents, Tottenham chose the other way around and are still looking for a new midfielder this summer.
