In the first competitive match of Vincent Kompany’s tenure as the manager at Bayern Munich, Bayern easily defeated second-tier side SSV Ulm 1846. The scoreboard showed a 4-0 victory but Bayern completely controlled the match with 804 passes, 16 shots, 77% possession, and only allowed one shot on goal.
How did Kompany get his team on the same page so quickly? In his postgame interview (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Kompany said that he accelerated his adaptation to the squad “by talking a lot to the players.”
Kompany also understands the sheer amount of strong opinions within the walls at Säbener Strasse. Kompany acknowledged that “…there are other people at the club who have known the players for longer. For me the most important thing is what I see. What the players have done in the past doesn’t matter to me. Things are getting better bit by bit.”
Communication (or lack thereof) has been a consistent issue at Bayern since the club won the sextuple in 2020. If Kompany can get the club aligned from the board to the roster, the sky is the limit for this talented group.
