And they’re off! The Vincent Kompany era kicks off at Bayern Munich with a tidy 4-0 victory against reigning 3. Liga champions SSV Ulm.
Despite a somewhat abbreviated preseason — Bayern has only just about gotten back to full strength after a busy summer of international tournaments — the Bavarians, and Kompany look like they mean business. So it’s early but this team looks like they just might be going the distance. They’re going for speed.

And a few more quick hitters:
- Mathys Tel and Jamal Musiala had fairly muted performances. Both players look like they need to click more — and find a better balance between self-expression and connecting with their teammates in attack.
- Dayot Upamecano and Josip Stanišić combined for a near scare around the hour mark. Upamecano looked the worst of it, having been caught ball-watching while Ulm winger Dennis Chessa ghosted around him inside the box. Bayern wasn’t punished today but the lapses were there.
- So. Many. Backheels!
- Vincent Kompany seems to have found the right mix of playing with width and getting runners in behind.
- How about that Aleksandar Pavlović pass over the top to Kingsley Coman around the 73rd minute? The Frenchman probably should have earned a penalty, but for technical reasons there is no VAR in the early rounds of the DFB-Pokal.
