After Bayern Munich’s 4-0 victory over SSV Ulm in the DFB-Pokal, not everyone was caught up in the excitement of the team’s first win under Vincent Kompany.
Some players were happy, but also a bit somber given the situation surrounding midfielder Leon Goretzka, who did not dress for the contest. Thomas Müller, who scored two goals and had one assist, addressed the situation the best he could.
“Leon is not having an easy situation, but he’s been training really excellently. There are always tough decisions to be made by the coach and the club. We’ll see what happens in the next days and weeks, but Leon is one of us,” Müller said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Goretzka, a popular figure in the Bayern Munich locker room, wants to stay and fight for his position on the team, but the club is giving him every verbal and non-verbal signal that he is no longer in the plans for the team.
It is a sad state of affairs in treating a club veteran as an afterthought, but part of Kompany’s job will be to ensure the group stays focused even with situations like this one.
