It has been quite a few weeks for Bayern Munich board director for sport Max Eberl.
Eberl oversaw a failed transfer attempt for Désiré Doué, was the target of a verbal attack from Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro, pushed the button on making Leon Goretzka obsolete and virtually unsellable, while also still treading water in negotiations to acquire Jonathan Tah.
Prior to that, Eberl did some very solid work in finishing the club’s coaching search and acquiring Michael Olise, João Palhinha, and Hiroki Ito. Needless to say, the executive had a lot to chat about, including the whiff on Doué.
“During a transfer period, you have plans. I would like to say that we have an outstanding squad. Then you have to make a decision: are things possible? are they not possible? – We prepare things, but sometimes it could be that things don’t happen. I read a lot about Bayern losing a transfer duel to this or that club. You can’t talk about defeat when things don’t work out,” Eberl said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
As for that public tiff with Carro and the mess with Tah, Eberl wants to keep everything going on with that close to his vest.
“It’s unfortunate that we have such a topic before the start. I think the quote (from Carro) speaks for itself. The only thing that comes to mind is: Speech is silver, silence is golden,” said Eberl (as captured by Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg). “We want the competition to happen on the pitch. There won’t be a verbal counterattack from me. For me, negotiations take place behind closed doors. If there’s no agreement, then we move on. Either things work out, or they don’t.”
No doubt Max, no doubt.
