German national team sporting director Rudi Völler has a long and stories history with Bayer Leverkusen as he had roles as a player, coach, and club executive for Die Werkself over the years.
“There haven’t been any intensive talks on this topic for a long time, and that’s what’s a bit annoying. There was an inquiry a long time ago, and also an offer, which Bayer Leverkusen logically rejected. No agreement was reached over time, there were few discussions, and that is a disappointing situation, especially for Bayer Leverkusen,” Völler said during an appearance on Sport1-Doppelpass (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Jonathan Tah has made incredible progress. He’s an enormously important player for Leverkusen and for the national team. Leverkusen is a club that doesn’t like to let players go for free. In principle, they would have liked to have come to an agreement, but as of now, they haven’t reached an agreement yet.”
Needless to say, Völler has a vested interested in what happens with Tah, but also a personal interest in what happens at Bayer Leverkusen. Bayern Munich appears to still be in the hunt for another center-back and this is still a deal that could go down.
Will it? Only the remaining days of the summer transfer window will tell us that tale.
