Friday night’s DFB-Pokal match against SSV Ulm was a bit of an eye opener to how Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich would play in the upcoming season, with an expansive style of football that differed greatly to his predecessor Thomas Tuchel. When asked about these changes by reporter Julian Buhl, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, captain Manuel Neuer acknowledged that Kompany’s ideas are beginning to take form on the pitch:
“We’ve already seen some of the ideas of the new coach on the pitch. We had good positioning and tried to keep the passing lanes short. We kept a clean sheet and didn’t concede chances. That’s why I have a good feeling. Things have worked well in terms of communication, body language and defending overall.
“You never really know where you stand before the first competitive game. But a comfortable win in which we were dominant from the start and continued to the end was what we set out to do. And we fulfilled that expectation.”
But one game is just one game. The next step will be fulfilling the massive expectations of Bayern Munich for the rest of the season. But the first game gives hope that those expectations could well be reached…
