Manchester City do have the financial muscle to buy Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, according to journalist Dean Jones.
Speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast (quotes via ManchesterCity.news), Jones said there is nothing stopping the Premier League champions from making a move for the Nigerian, who has scored 114 goals in his professional career:
“If you speak to people close to City, there’s one guy I speak to about City who is well-connected and he’s of the feeling that they could go and spend loads of money in this window if they wanted to. They’re being careful but he said to me the other day that if they wanted to sign a £100 million player, if they wanted to sign Victor Osimhen next week, they could go and do it.”
Osimhen is actually available for less than £100m, with reports claiming that Napoli have already accepted a €65m (£55m) bid from Al Ahli, but the player is keen on remaining in Europe.
City are looking to sign a forward
Following the sale of Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid, Pep Guardiola’s side have been scouring the market for a potential replacement.
However, they are not expected to shell out a sizeable transfer fee as they are looking for someone who would be happy to be a backup to Erling Haaland. FC Copenhagen’s Orri Oskarsson and Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi are the two players who are on the club’s shortlist.
Where will Osimhen end up?
While a transfer to the Etihad is extremely unlikely, the 25-year-old could still make the switch to the Premier League before the transfer window closes on Friday.
Chelsea have been in talks with Osimhen and his club, but there are key issues that need to be resolved. The Blues would prefer a loan deal, while the player’s salary could prove problematic.
