A tight game, but Bayern Munich got the job done.
Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany improves to 2-0 in his first Bundesliga season with a 2-0 win over SC Freiburg in his home debut. It was a hard-fought win against a feisty Freiburg team that did not look overawed by the occasion, and Bayern required every bit of its guile, resources, and bench.
Harry Kane glanced an off-target header off Freiburg defender Max Rosenfelder’s arm to earn a cheeky penalty in the first half. Bayern survived a sleep effort in the second half long enough for substitute Thomas Müller to score a trademark goal in a record-making appearance — yet another feather in the cap of a storied career.
Freiburg earned a strange concession penalty right at the death — João Palhinha might feel particularly aggrieved had there been any stakes — but Lucas Höler rocketed his shot over the bar and into the stratosphere.
