Bayern Munich came into the game against SC Freiburg knowing how the visitors had blown away their arch rivals and last season’s second placed team, VfB Stuttgart, in their previous match and how the Bayern defense had crumbled in the previous match. All eyes were on Bayern’s backline, but it held extremely firm and limited Freiburg to almost nothing. If it were not for a freak divot in the grass (Chuck, we need that grassworks article!) and a freak handball in the box that led to a late missed penalty, Freiburg would not have come close to sniffing a goal. In the end, despite the freak incidents, Bayern still walked away with a clean sheet.
And Manuel Neuer, speaking after the game, underlined just how important this clean sheet was. @iMiaSanMia captured this response: “It was a good performance. The season is still very young. It was important that we kept a clean sheet, that we were the better team and are slowly getting into our stride.”
Bayern players surrounded the referee after the penalty was missed, still incensed at the decision. But after the anger faded, a real sense of calm and satisfaction seemed to surround the players. After so much talk about how the defense was weak and brittle, a convincing performance and the clean sheet just before the break has put pause to such discussions.
