They may be down, but they are not out. Not by a long shot. Kingsley Coman and Thomas Müller have had a tougher time of late at Bayern, with the former almost being offloaded in the past transfer window and the latter dropping from role as undroppable starter to more of a bench player as of late. But when Bayern started to wobble against SC Freiburg’s pressure and the onslaught began to grow, it was the two veterans who came on and stabilized the team with their quality, energy and intelligence proving vital. Of course, Müller’s goal did not hurt either.
When asked about the match in the post match press conference, Vincent Kompany made sure to shout out the two veterans for their contributions, as captured by @iMiaSanMia: “The first half was really positive for us trying to limit the threat of the opponent and at the same time create our own chances. We were good on the second balls and the counter pressing. In the second half we were one step later than Freiburg players on the second balls and lost a bit of momentum. I have to say we’re very fortunate to have players [on the bench] who can make the difference. Thomas Müller and Kingsley Coman were very important for us to win the game.”
Having been a part of Bayern Munich’s first team for about a combined 24 years now, these two now how to get it done. When all else goes wrong, being able to call on these two is not half bad.
